About the event
50 years ago in July 1968, The Band broke out from Bob Dylan and started a new musical journey that would span more than 30 years and produce 10 albums. Music from Big Pink was the debut studio album by the Band, with a distinctive blend of country, rock, folk, classical, R&B, and soul. The music was composed partly in "Big Pink", a house shared by Rick Danko, Richard Manuel and Garth Hudson in West Saugerties, New York, thus Music from Big Pink.
The album is ranked number 34 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
Even though initial sales of Music from Big Pink were low, it attracted the attention of major artists including Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Roger Waters, and many others. Full of classic tracks that would continue to be performed live throughout their career, in particular "The Weight", "Long Black Veil", and "I Shall Be Released" were standouts on an album full of incredible music.
